Thousands of Volunteers Build Beds for Kids in Need
In an amazing act of kindness, about 6,500 volunteers came together to help children who do not have beds of their own. In just 24 hours, they built more than 10,000 beds. This huge effort took place inside the Charlotte Convention Center.
The volunteers included employees from Lowe’s, along with many other people who wanted to help. They all worked together to support a charity called Sleep in Heavenly Peace, which helps provide beds for children in need.
One volunteer, Jenna Restrepo, worked hard throughout her shift. She sanded wood, carried boards, and helped stamp pieces for the beds. By the end, she had lost track of how much work she had done. But what mattered most to her was not the number of beds—it was the children who would use them.
“I’m thinking about my own kids,” she said. “I’m so lucky they have their own beds. I hope every child can feel safe and comfortable like they do.”
Right now, more than 140,000 children across the United States are waiting for a bed. That is why many groups joined together to help. Companies like Bank of America and Honeywell helped support the project. Organizations such as Rebuilding Together and the Charlotte Hornets also took part.
The event required a lot of teamwork. Volunteers were split into 16 different lines. Each group had a job, such as cutting wood, sanding it smooth, putting pieces together, or finishing the beds. Everyone worked in a steady rhythm, like a giant assembly line. Each step depended on the one before it.
After 24 hours of nonstop work, the results were incredible. Thousands of finished beds were stacked and ready to be delivered. These beds will be sent to families in 36 states through 110 local chapters of Sleep in Heavenly Peace.
For many volunteers, this experience was very meaningful. It gave them a chance to do something important and help others in a big way.
Experts say that having a bed is very important for children. Douglas Kirsch, a doctor who studies sleep, explained that kids who do not get enough good sleep can struggle with their health and learning. Without proper rest, it is harder for them to focus in school and stay healthy.
In the end, this project was about more than just building beds. It was about giving children a safe and comfortable place to sleep. A bed may seem simple, but it can make a big difference in a child’s life. It can help them feel secure, rested, and ready to learn and grow.
