Alternate Lives: If You Could Start Over, What Would You Become?

Have you ever wondered what your life might have looked like if you had chosen a different path?

Many seniors spent decades building careers, raising families, serving in the military, volunteering, or caring for others. Along the way, dreams were sometimes set aside because life took a different direction. But imagining an “alternate life” can be a fun and meaningful way to reflect on who you are—and who you still might become.

If you could completely change careers and master a brand-new skill, what would you choose?

Maybe you would become a wildlife photographer, traveling the world to capture breathtaking images of nature. Perhaps you would learn to play the piano well enough to perform for family and friends. Some people dream of becoming authors, chefs, artists, pilots, or historians. Others might choose careers that help people, such as teaching, counseling, or nursing.

The wonderful thing is that it’s never too late to learn. While you may not be looking for a new full-time career, retirement offers something many people never had before—time. Time to explore interests that were once pushed aside by work and family responsibilities.

Research shows that learning new skills keeps the brain active and can improve memory, confidence, and overall well-being. Whether you’re taking a painting class, learning a new language, studying genealogy, or figuring out how to play pickleball, every new challenge gives your brain a healthy workout.

This question also opens the door to wonderful conversations. Ask your friends what they would choose. Their answers may surprise you. The quiet accountant may have dreamed of being a jazz musician. The retired teacher may have wanted to be an archaeologist. You may discover hidden passions and fascinating stories that have never been shared before.

If you could wake up tomorrow with the knowledge and skills to succeed in any completely different career, what would it be—and why?

There are no wrong answers. Sometimes the dream itself tells us something important about what we value, what excites us, or what adventures we still hope to experience.

After all, while we can’t rewrite our past, we can always write another chapter.
